Drawing on Intuitive Guidance to Make Strong Choices:
The Line Down the Page
You can integrate intuitive guidance into your daily life in order to make strong choices and wise decisions. Sometimes this involves the art of self-overcoming. This chapter provides some very practical examples and a simple exercise that you can perform either physically or in your mindâs eye when you are faced with a variety of choices.
My husbandâs birthday comes at the height of the summer, and recently his birthday fell during the middle of the week. By choice he and I share a car, so this means that I do not have access to a car during the daytime on weekdays. The day before his birthday was a Tuesday, and it was literally 102 degrees in Houston. In addition to having put in a very full day of work, I had exercised and I was feeling grimy. Moreover, by the time my husband came home, rush hour traffic was at its peak. So, I am ashamed to tell you the rationalizing train of thought that went through my mind: âWell, since tomorrow is his actual birthday, I can always pop out quickly tomorrow to pick up a birthday cake and some celebration things.â This was immediately followed by the counter-thought, âOkay, but then when he comes in the door after a long day of work on his actual birthday, after spending all day in the office, he will not be greeted by the sight of a festive birthday celebration, and this will change the way he feels about his entire birthday.â Thus even if it were a minor physical inconvenience, it was obvious to me what I needed to do, and which option was emotionally and spiritually the stronger choice. It was such a small thing, yet in my heart I knew how the consequences of both decisions would make my husband feel, and also, how they would make me feel. So I got in the car and I found a beautiful cake and some colorful streamers. The next day my husbandâs birthday was a joyous celebration.
Let me ratchet things up a notch. As I have mentioned, I truly dislike going to the dentistâs, even for routine exams and cleanings. Yet I would dislike it far more if I did not go to the dentistâs for routine exams and cleanings. Not only would there be physical effects, but just as importantly, the choice not to go would mean that I was putting myself behind a curtain of fear and apprehension. If I use my free will knowingly to live behind such a curtain of fear, then I am misusing my energies and I cannot be in my strongest and best form, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. So, twice a year I go to the dentistâs for cleanings and exams. While I do not enjoy the experience, I cherish the sense of empowerment and well-being that come from making the choice to be in a position of strength. In this way,
